- About the Publisher
‘You can’t be. Kieron is my brother. Catherine was my sister. We should be a family of five but we’re four. You can’t have another son, you… you just can’t.’ Connor’s pulse races. He feels sick. Scared. Nothing is as he thought it was. His parents are… fucking insane. His best friend is his brother?
‘You’ve lied to me. All these years. All the times Ryan’s stayed over.’ Connor’s tears come now, falling freely. He remembers the times his dad would kick a football around with them in the garden. Praise Ryan who was infinitely better at sport than Connor.
‘Do you… Do you love him more than me?’ He wipes his nose with his sleeve as though he’s five years old. Stupid being jealous but Ryan… not just his brother but Kieron’s too. Connor should be the one to save this family. He had volunteered for a living transplant. It should be him.
‘Connor. I love you more than anything, you and Kieron,’ Dad says. ‘I didn’t even know Ryan was mine until today but now I do, we have a real chance here…’
They all fall silent.
‘I wanted to help Kieron.’ Connor is the first to speak.
‘I know but you’re not eighteen yet.’
‘I know all that but as soon as I am I want to help. I weighed up all the options and I made a choice. Ryan hasn’t been given a choice. This… this isn’t right, Mum.’
‘But Connor, we can’t wait until next year.’
‘No.’ He holds up his hand. ‘No. All of my life I have felt responsible for Catherine. These last few months I have felt responsible for Hailey. I lied about what happened. She didn’t fall during a walk. We’d snuck out to do a dare. It went wrong. I have to live with that. Don’t make me live with being responsible for Ryan if something goes wrong. Don’t make Kieron feel responsible for Ryan, for you being in prison. He… He might have a new liver but he’ll have lost a parent. I’ll have lost a parent. Please Mum, please. Don’t do this.’
He knows how to make her change her mind.
Chapter Ninety
Aidan
It is like being pulled out of a dream for Aidan. He wades back to reality. He can’t believe that he almost agreed to help Lucy operate on Melissa’s son – his son.
‘Mum.’
He sees Connor run towards Lucy.
He sees what is going to happen.
He is too slow to stop it.
