- About the Publisher
‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry,’ he blurted out to Mr Marshall as he entered the room. Snot and tears had clogged his throat. His eyes, two swollen slits. ‘I’m sorry.’
Mr Marshall glared at him and it was Connor’s dad who led him away, throwing a glance over his shoulder at the man who stood broken and alone.
‘I can’t imagine…’ Dad shook his head. He didn’t say anything else. Connor had no idea whether he was angry or sad. Resentful or relieved. Whether Dad felt all of it or none of it.
But still, Connor had had the childish faith that his mum could fix this. His mum could make everything better. It was a leg.
A broken leg.
Nothing more, something easily fixed, so Connor didn’t know why he felt a morbid apprehension when his mum finally stood in front of him, but he did.
Chapter Sixty-Two
Lucy
I’m here.
Am I doing the right thing?
Slowly, slowly, I climb out of the car. Above me the dark grey sky is bursting with heavy rain clouds. Autumn leaves whirl around my feet as a chill wind whips my hair around my face. I barely register the cold because my blood is anxious-hot, running through my veins. My heart bouncing wildly in my chest. Fight or flight. But I have to do this.
I have to.
For my son.
Am I doing the right thing?
It is hard to put one foot in front of the other, as though my feet are no longer controlled by me. My body numb with fear.
Am I doing the right thing?
I’m here.
And I have never felt so scared.
Chapter Sixty-Three
Connor
‘Surgery went very well.’ Connor’s mum gave a tired smile. ‘You won’t be able to see Hailey tonight, she needs to rest, but perhaps you can visit tomorrow, depending on whether her father let’s you see her.’
‘Does he… Is he…’ Connor wasn’t entirely sure what he was trying to ask.
‘He’s with her now. Refusing to go home. Connor… I’ve had to be honest and tell him it would be quite rare to break a femur in the circumstances you’ve described.’
‘So… what will happen now?’ Connor expected the cold steel of handcuffs on his wrists. He was unsure what his crime was but he felt the guilt nevertheless. ‘Will the police…’ He can’t finish his sentence. He shouldn’t be thinking of himself right now.
