Minutes tick by and dark thoughts creep in. What if I am too late?
Hurry.
Again, my foot presses the pedal to the floor and we are roaring ahead.
Chapter Forty-Eight
Aidan
Aidan hasn’t been able to focus on the lecture since her text.
Ignore me & you’ll be SORRY
He had turned his phone off but now it’s the coffee break he worries that Lucy might need him and so he switches it back on. He was right to be concerned, he sees the missed calls from her. Has something happened at Kieron’s appointment?
He tries to call her back but it goes straight to voicemail.
Something is wrong.
He calls her again, again. No reply. He tries Connor. Kieron. None of them answering.
His handset beeps a text alert.
I have something you want. Clock is ticking. I’ll let u know where & when
It’s a slow and sickening dawning that she won’t ever leave them alone until she’s destroyed his family. How far will he go to protect them? The muscles in his jaw tighten painfully, his back teeth grind together. He knows how far he’ll go.
As far as it takes.
He’s only half an hour from home and, as Aidan speeds away from the hotel, he intermittently redials Lucy’s number, reaching her voicemail each time.
His quiet cul-de-sac is a flurry of activity. Police cars, a tangle of blue and white crime-scene tape sectioning off his front garden. He feels, he actually feels, his heart plummeting, free-falling into his boots, landing with a thud. He can’t get onto the driveway and so he screeches to a halt, half blocking the neighbours’ drive and almost falls out of his car. Outside the surrounding houses, occupants cluster on steps, huddling under the shelter of porches or umbrellas speculating about what might have happened inside this red-bricked four bedroom with its neat flowerbeds and double garage.
There’s a sense of detachment – a sense of this-can’t-be-real as Aidan ducks under the tape and pushes aside the policeman who demands his name and tells him he can’t go inside.
‘Try to bloody stop me.’ Aidan splashes through the puddles on his driveway as he sprints into his house. It’s a short journey, not more than eight steps, but during those eight steps myriad scenarios burn through Aidan’s brain, macabre images scorched onto his retinas that he’ll never be able to shake. It can’t be Kieron, there’d be an ambulance otherwise, possibly Lucy – his heart hurts at the thought of his wife beaten and bloody – but he knows, he knows before he’s told that it’s Connor.
The Taken.
