- About the Publisher
Now, the stairs stretch in front of Connor carpeted in a dark green swirl. Hailey’s room is at the back of the house on the right. He wonders what it looks like now. Whether all the posters of Stranger Things and Orange Is the New Black have been removed. The glittery nail polish and pale pink lip glosses that were strewn over her chest of drawers packed away. There’s the lounge to his left. At the back of the house a dining room and a kitchen with steps leading down to the basement. Everywhere has a musty smell. The hallway is gloomy. One of the light bulbs is out. Cobwebs hang from darkened corners. Despite the photos of Hailey still hanging from the walls, it is no longer a home and Connor knows that he and he alone is the cause of this.
He has broken this family.
Now, Connor thinks the monster might be him.
He could run. Shove Mr Marshall out of the way and race towards the back door. Unlock it, smash it even. Scream for help as he pelts across the garden, heading towards the gate. He is younger. Fitter.
He could run.
But he doesn’t want to.
Connor turns to face Mr Marshall. Whatever is coming to him is no more than he deserves. His courage catches in his throat as he wonders if Tyler suffered. Ryan. A deep-rooted primal instinct whispering to him, Find a way out.
But too late, Connor’s shoulder dips under the weight of Mr Marshall’s hand and he is propelled forwards. Towards the back of the house.
Towards the basement.
Chapter Fifty-Four
Ryan
Now as he lies in the blackness wondering if anyone will ever find him, he casts his mind back to three days ago and one thought, just one thought, whirls around Ryan’s head, faster and faster, until he’s dizzy with it.
It didn’t matter that he knew the driver. That he was cold and tired and was grateful for a lift.
He shouldn’t have got in the car.
He shouldn’t have got in the car.
He shouldn’t have got in the car.
Chapter Fifty-Five
Connor
The basement entrance looms – a black hungry mouth – but instead of being propelled down the stairs Mr Marshall gives Connor a short, sharp push between his shoulder blades. The door to the dining room is ajar, from the other side, a soft moaning sound. Connor stops, tries to shuffle backwards, not wanting to confront what he knows awaits him.
Afraid.
