- About the Publisher
‘An Xbox magazine?’ Kieron isn’t as obsessed as Connor is with gaming but he wants to share the same interests as his brother. Connor learns as he plays, Kieron prefers to read about new games first. How to level up. Find the Easter eggs. Build a world.
‘I won’t be long, don’t answer the door to anyone.’ I plant a kiss on the top of his head, his hair smells faintly of apples.
It isn’t until I’m drawing closer to the supermarket that I notice the car behind me.
The white car.
My hands tighten on the steering wheel.
Paranoid, Aidan called me.
Obsessive.
But still, I keep seeing it.
I signal left, the car follows me. This time I slow down and try to memorize the number plate but the car speeds past me, turning right into Tesco car park. Now I am the one following them.
It must be a coincidence, there’s no way anyone could have known I was coming here. No reason for anyone to follow me. The only thing trailing after me is my own guilty conscience.
But I am slow getting out of the car. Glancing around me as I zap my door locked. Walking faster than I normally would towards the store.
I scan the car park; I can see at least nine white cars. Throwing a glance over my shoulder, I spot three more.
I grab a basket rather than a trolley and stalk up and down the aisles, soup, fresh bread, magazine, grapes, toilet rolls – we seem to be forever running out. I self-scan, which takes me twice as long, before I hurry back to my car, conscious that Kieron will be waiting for his lunch.
Down the side of the driver’s door runs a jagged groove. I throw the shopping in the boot and then crouch by the scratch and run my finger across it. It’s deep. Too low and too uneven to have been caused by a trolley.
Someone has keyed my car deliberately, but who? Why?
Yes, again I have that cold, squirming feeling deep in the pit of my stomach. Hurriedly, I lock myself inside my vehicle. Start the engine.
There’s a screech. A car speeding towards the exit.
Everything else fades away as it falls into sharp focus.
It’s white.
