  43. Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health

“You know what the fuck I mean! And if you don’t, then take it how you want to, Trae.”

“No. I don’t know what you mean. Tell me.”

“Trae, you haven’t been home a full twenty minutes, and we are already fighting. What? What are we going to do? You’re right, let’s get all the shit out now.”

“I know, but I wasn’t going to bring that up Tasha. Let’s squash any and all bullshit. I’m not talking about that. Every deed has a consequence. You put them dogs on ole girl. I doubt if they gonna let that go. So shit is real. We are not living in a fantasy land. We have to know and prepare ourselves for a clap back or we have to make the first move. That’s a conversation we need to have sooner than later.

And the other shit is you had a paternity test. You had to get one for a reason. What Tasha? You was suspecting that the baby was his?”

It looked like I took all of the breath out of Tasha. I knew I should have waited to bring the bullshit up because I knew it was going to get heated. Now I had to diffuse the situation or mess up my homecoming and all of the trouble we went through to pull this day off.

“Trae, I wasn’t sure. I wanted to be sure. And I’m so glad, this little person is us. This is us baby. Our baby girl. Me and you.”

“Then we are going to do what we always do. Get through it. Because, for real, that shit ain’t about nothing. I just needed to get it off my chest. I’m right here with you. Nothing can break our bond. Nothing! I’m willing to put in the work to get us back. Is it worth it to you? It’s damn sure worth it to me.”

“Yes, we are worth it. You know that. But I don’t want to fight with you anymore. I’m mentally beat, baby. Can I enjoy my husband for a couple of days? No fights. No arguments. Please? If you want me or need me to still be that ride or die, I will do that. Just let me know if that’s what we are doing. I was angry at you. You were angry at me. We are even. So, it stops here. Now tell me, Trae. Right here. Right now. What are we going to do?”

“Let’s take it one day at a time. And for now, let’s just enjoy the moment. I love you and I miss you.”

I began rubbing the love of my life’s stomach. The baby gave a hard ass kick. “Damn! What are we having? A karate kid?” I joked.
