  43. Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health

“To the two-bedroom condo. But for now follow me,” she said. My heels click-clacked against the pavement as I tried to keep up with her and understand what was happening. She grabbed up Kaeerah and they moved out of the house she shared with Faheem? And we were at a nut house, and I needed to keep this confidential; why?

What the hell was she about to lay on me.

FAHEEM

I received a text from Kay telling me to call my daughter. We spoke every day, so I couldn’t help but wonder what was up.

“Dad, come home. I have to tell you something,” Kaeerah whispered.

“Tell me what?” She had me whispering.

“Come see me in the new house. I gotta ask you something.”

“Ask me what?”

“Mommy said I can go to the school around the corner. What are you going to say?”

“We gotta talk about that.”

“That’s why I said come over to me and mommy’s new house.”

“Y’all not at the other house anymore?”

“No, Dad. I will text you the address. I want you to tell her I don’t want to go to the school around the corner. Okay, Dad?”

“Text me the address.”

“I will. Don’t tell Mommy we had this conversation. You are coming tonight, right?”

“Yeah, I’ll be there.”

“I’ll wait up and let you in. Love you, Daddy.”

“I love you, too.”

I had to go see what was going on. Immediately, I got in my car to go see Angel and get the key; I didn’t trust Kaeerah to stay up. I had to drive more than two hours to get to Angel’s and one more to get to Jaz’s new spot. I already felt like I had been up for the last two days.

It was just past midnight. This was my favorite time of night to drive around the city. When I jump on the Turnpike, my head begins to clear. An old practice that I used back in the day. I pulled in front of Jaz’s new condo, parked and got out. There was a light on downstairs. I knocked. I knocked again and waited. I took the key out and used it. Jaz was at the door with a burner pointed.

“Yo, it’s me!”

“Shit, Faheem!” She dropped the gun to her side and held her chest with the other. “You scared the hell out of me.”

“That’s why your ass should be where you are supposed to be.”

I brushed past her to get in the house. “What are you doing here, Faheem? How in the hell did you get a key?”

I took off my jacket and placed it on the sofa.

“Give me my key, Faheem.”

“I didn’t come here to fight, Jaz.” I grabbed her hand.

“Why did you come?”

“I came to fuck my wife.” I pulled her to me.
