  43. Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health

“Rick? Hey, bae.” It was Kyra. “When you coming home? Both of your ladies here miss you.”

I loved hearing Kyra’s voice. I loved everything about her. Especially when she said she missed me. But if she missed me so much and she loved me so much, then what was the problem? Why weren’t we together?

KYRA

Marvin. Tyler. Rick. Yup! I only had sex with three men in my life. Marvin and Tyler were my high school sweethearts. Eventually, Marvin and I got married. Marvin went to prison, and I thought I had moved on with my life; that was until he came home, and his first stop was to find me. We eventually moved to LA with Trae and Tasha; all of us wanted a fresh start. But Marvin started back using drugs.

Long story short, that’s how I wound up shot in the head. I was out chasing behind my husband when he was on a drug run one night. The nigga was so fuckin’ high, he left me for dead. Yes, dead. The next thing I knew, I was waking up out of a coma, and I had amnesia. I found out my identity by a former UCLA classmate who recognized me. But it was Rick who saved my life.

* *

I was dreaming that I was riding in a car. However, when I opened my eyes, I was. How did I get here? The last thing I remembered was looking for Tasha Macklin, and then standing on the porch in front of Rick. I had recognized him. Tears were streaming down his cheeks, and then everything went black . . .

That was crazy. Yes, Rick happened to show up at Tasha’s at the same time I did. How spooky is that? After I blacked out, he took me to the hospital, then got me back to Tasha and Aisha. He had saved me once again. Everyone thought I was dead. I can only imagine what that must have been like.

Rick left us early last week. And I missed him. I felt better now that I’d talked to him. He said he was out working. At first, I didn’t believe him. But something was up with Trae and Kaylin, and he was being very tight lipped. These men are so damn secretive. If we didn’t know what the hell was going on, how could we help if help was needed?

For some reason, I picked up the phone and dialed a number I had known for a long time but didn’t feel the need to use it because I was like fuck that bitch.

“Hello?” Nina said.

“Hello,” I said. “This is Kyra.”

There was silence.

This shit was more awkward than ever.

“How’s Little Rick?” I had to break the silence since I called her. I could feel Nina’s defense slowly coming down.

“He’s doing better. He’s gaining weight.” Then she paused. “How’s Destiny?”
