- Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health
My heart flip-flopped in my chest as the dark vehicle got one car behind me. I finally saw an exit, and I cut over three lanes, just barely being missed by two cars, and jumped off the freeway. Cars screeched to abrupt stops, just barely avoiding a big traffic accident. The car couldn’t get over to follow me. I let out a sigh of relief.
I drove in a circle until I was sure no one was tailing me, then I headed home, looking in my rearview mirror the entire time. I was freaking out.
Rushing into the house I yelled, “Faheem! Faheem!” My breathing was jagged, and I was flushed.
“What’s the matter, bae?” Faheem came out of the kitchen with a dish towel in his hand.
He was wearing an apron, looking alarmed.
I let out a deep breath. “Someone was following me.” I rushed into my man’s arms.
“What? Why didn’t you call? Did they follow you here?”
“No, I lost them on the highway. I was driving like a madwoman, swerving in and out of traffic. Baby, I was scared shitless.” I burst into tears. “I was really being followed.”
“Jaz, this is it. You’re going to have to come out of school until we get everything straightened out. I’m going to take you and Kaeerah over to Trae’s with everyone else. They have round-the-clock protection.”
This time I didn’t object.
FAHEEM
“You sure this is the only way to handle this; can’t we just move again?” Jaz asked, as I pulled up in front of the spot in Sag Harbor. “Why were they following me? Angel’s house getting shot up had nothing to do with us.”
“Jaz, baby I know. At least I think I know. We’ve got to get shit straight. It’s too hot right now and I don’t want anything to happen to you or our baby. I don’t have any answers.” We gave each other a deep kiss.
“Bye, Daddy,” Kaeerah said, kissing me on the cheek.
“Bye, baby girl.” I kissed my daughter back. “I’ll see you soon.”
As the Don’s men got their bags and escorted them inside the house, I felt an overwhelming anxiety. Life, as we knew it, was already changing. Jaz had a point. Angel’s house getting shot up shouldn’t have had anything to do with us. So, who tried to run Jaz off the road and why? How did they know it was her?
