  43. Wahida Clark on Mental and Behavioral Health

I turned the tape off, and my stomach dropped to my knees. I was sick. Did Trae watch this one? What if the DNA test was wrong? It was close together; the time I was with Trae, and the rape. My head was fucked up. A sense of dread flooded through me, but I decided to take a nap and calm my nerves. But shit, what if this was Kyron’s baby?

ANGEL

I guess you could say I’d gotten spoiled over the past three years since my baby started school. Jahara was eight years old and very independent. My life had been family, work, and time for myself. I had a spa day with a massage every Saturday. A day for a mani and pedi, and a private hairdresser who came to the office. I was in the office from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and I jumped on a plane at least once a week.

But since the shooting my life was totally different. I was no longer the lawyer at my husband’s record company. I felt like I was just a housewife and I didn’t like it. I couldn’t see how Tasha did it.

I was trying to adjust to this new life of semi-hiding, morning sickness, and Kay being in China. For how long, I didn’t know. We had tours and new album release parties that I had to turn over to our new manager, Seth Cohen, a young, smart, hungry, Jewish cat. I never realized what a control freak I was until I had to loosen the reins. I loved when we would break in new artists: the media frenzy, and how we took our artists to Greece, Spain, the UK, Africa. Game Over Records would crush it.

I was going through all these tumultuous emotions. Even with Aunt Marva’s help, I was trying to take care of five children, three rough-and-tumble boys, and two precocious little girls. Some relief came when Kyra arrived, supposedly to get Aisha, but she wound up staying with us. Kyra was due in about four weeks, but she wasn’t nearly as big as Tasha, who was still on bed rest. We had three able-bodied women to help with the twins, Kareem and Shaheem, Caliph, and the girls, Jahara and Aisha.

This morning I woke up and my first thought was, I’m going to stay in bed until noon and have some time to myself. This was going to be a me-day. I would do my own mani and pedi and enjoy myself. Suddenly, I heard Tasha yell my name.

“Angel! Marva! Anybody up? It’s real this time. My water broke!”
