‘Seriously?’ Clodagh looked at the two men, incredulous. ‘You already know what I think of that, Jake. You too, Adam. I’ve told you that I will never, under any circumstances, speak in public about the crash or anything that’s happened after that.’

‘Even if it helps Adam?’ Jake said.

‘It doesn’t help me if it’s not something Clodagh wants to do,’ Adam said. ‘I’m sorry, Clodagh. I told Jake you wouldn’t want to do it, but he insisted on asking you himself. I understand why you don’t want to do it, and I respect that.’

‘What’s respect got to do with anything?’ Jake said. ‘The production company offered to double your fee if you appear together. Your public profile has taken a big hit these last few months. We need to be taking any opportunity we can to get you back out there.’ He scowled at Clodagh. ‘After everything he’s done for you, I didn’t think it was too much asking you to do this one small thing in return. Clearly I got that wrong.’

A surge of rage burned through her, hot and fierce. She didn’t know which one of them she was angrier with – Jake for being an overbearing boor, or Adam for dragging her in here under false pretences.

‘Fuck you, Jake,’ she said, when she was able to speak without shouting. ‘How dare you come into my home and speak to me like that?’

‘Sorry.’ Jake held his hands up, clearly not sorry at all but knowing he’d pushed her too far. ‘I didn’t mean to upset you, but this business with Nick is going to be big news whether we like it or not. Which means that no matter how unpalatable you find it, I’ve got to try to find a way to turn it into an opportunity for your fella here. I need to get him speaking to the media, getting his side of the story out there before they start making stuff up. Surely you can see how important that is?’

‘Not really,’ Clodagh said. ‘Adam hasn’t done anything wrong.’

‘I was thinking more about you than Adam,’ Jake said. ‘This could turn pretty nasty for you if you’re not careful.’

‘Nasty how?’

She shouldn’t listen to him, knowing he’d do and say anything to get his own way. Yet part of her already knew he was right. In the years following the accident, she’d become accustomed to the intrusiveness into every aspect of her private life.
