She spotted Sam Latimer at his desk. A detective on the graduate fast-track scheme, Sam was young, ambitious, bright and, according to Ade, sex on legs. Rachel thought he was a cocky git who needed bringing down a peg or two, an opinion she had – so far – kept to herself.

‘Sam!’

‘What can I do for you, Rach?’

It’s Rachel, she almost snapped, before realising she couldn’t tell him it was okay for Ade to call her that but not anyone else.

‘Any update on finding our missing survivors?’

At the briefing earlier, she’d told Sam his priority this morning was to find Ivan Babić and Robbie Fuson. It was ridiculous they’d come no closer to tracking them down yet. The back of Rachel’s neck prickled with irritation as she waited for Sam’s update.

‘I’ve chased Border Force,’ he said. ‘There’s no record of either man leaving the country over the last week. So I’ve asked them to go back over the last three months and check the system for Robbie Fuson’s name. It shouldn’t take them too long to get back to me. In the meantime, I’ve got something else for you. I’ve been going back over the backgrounds of each of the survivors, trying to see if there’s anything else that connects them. Apart from the obvious, of course.’

‘And?’

‘Well, we already know that Clodagh and Nick stayed in the same resort in Crete, right? At first, I couldn’t find anything connecting the other survivors. Until now. It might not mean anything, but I think you’ll find it interesting.’

Sam grinned, clearly pleased with himself.

‘Go on then, spit it out.’

‘At the time of the crash, Ivan was working in a restaurant on the south of the island in a small village called Mirtos. Which also happens to be the same village Robbie Fuson was staying in when he went on holiday to Crete. A bit of a coincidence that he spent two weeks in Mirtos and ended up flying back with Ivan, don’t you think?’

‘You think they flew back together,’ Rachel said. ‘Which means they’re much better friends than we realised.’

‘It also means Ivan might be the only person who knows where Robbie has gone,’ Sam said.

Rachel ran her mind back over everything she knew so far about Ivan Babić and Robbie Fuson, trying to work out how she’d missed it. Not one person they’d spoken to had mentioned anything about Ivan and Robbie having a connection outside the plane crash. Yet it seemed the two men must have known each other, were possibly even in a relationship. A potentially important piece of information that she had somehow missed.
