‘I was a very good footballer at one time,’ Ivan said. ‘I will teach him when he is old enough.’

‘You played football?’ Clodagh asked, glancing at Ivan’s stomach which was almost as big as her own.

‘I’m a man of many secret talents, lady. Although today I do not feel so talented. I am very hungover.’

‘What a surprise.’

The two friends linked arms and started walking.

‘It is a surprise, actually. I didn’t drink very much, but still I feel like shit. So, I have decided. From today Uncle Ivan will drink no more.’

‘You think that’s possible?’

‘It is a new year, lady. The sun is shining and we are here, walking together along the seafront, sharing our stories like a pair of old lovers. Anything is possible on a day like this.’

Acknowledgements

First and foremost, thank you to my agent Laura Longrigg for helping to rebuild my writing career during a very difficult time in my life. Huge thanks to the wonderful team at Canelo and Canelo Crime: Louise Cullen and Francesca Riccardi – two women I cannot wait to share a drink (or two) with after lockdown; Nicola Piggott, Siân Heap, Claudine Sagoe and Deborah Blake.

Special mention to two people who shared their knowledge and expertise so generously while I was writing this book. Deborah Reade, thank you for all the brilliant and insightful advice on police procedure. And Steve Wood, a man with an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things aviation, who helped me so much in working out some of the finer plot details. Both of you were amazing and, as always, any mistakes are down to me.

Thank you also Nigel Adams for your generous advice. Unfortunately, the scene you advised on got cut in the edits but I’m still hugely grateful to you!

Love and hugs to my fellow crime writers Lorraine Mace, Marion Todd and Chris Curran – y’all know how much your support means to me.

Thank you to Chris Simmons from crimesquad.com – someone else I’m looking forward to catching up with over a drink sometime soon.

Thanks to all the bloggers, reviewers and readers who’ve said so many lovely things about my books and work so hard to promote authors. And finally, thank you to the brilliant admin team at UK Crime Book Club – you guys are the best!
