‘He’s not here, either. Nor is Felicity. They stayed here last night and were due to go back to London later today.’

‘Is it possible Adam went with them?’

‘Maybe.’ Clodagh hadn’t thought of that. Because surely, if Adam had decided to go to London, he’d have left her a note or sent her a text. It would be too cruel to leave without telling her, especially given what had happened over the last week.

‘You’ve tried calling Adam, I assume?’

‘I keep getting his voicemail. I’ve left a message but, so far, he hasn’t called me back.’

‘What about Jake? Can you call him and ask if he knows where Adam might be?’

‘Good idea,’ Clodagh said. ‘I’ll do that right away.’

‘Let me know how you get on,’ Rachel said. ‘If Jake doesn’t know where Adam is, I’ll come over right away.’

‘Thank you,’ Clodagh said. ‘I really appreciate it.’

As she dialled Jake’s number, she ran back upstairs to the bedroom. Adam always used the same Samsonite suitcase for his overnight trips. If he was in London, the suitcase would be with him.

‘Clodagh?’ Felicity’s voice, not Jake’s. Because Jake was probably sleeping off all the alcohol he’d consumed this weekend, Clodagh realised.

‘Hi Felicity, I’m really sorry to bother you. I’m trying to get hold of Adam. I don’t suppose you know where he is?’

‘I told him he should let you know,’ Felicity said. ‘I would have called you myself, but I don’t have your number and Jake’s phone has a security code so I couldn’t call you from that.’

While she was speaking, Clodagh pulled open Adam’s wardrobe. Sure enough, the suitcase was gone.

‘Where is he?’ she said.

‘He came back to London with us. He was pretty upset after you left. He insisted we go straight back to the house so he could pack. He said he wanted to be gone before you came home so he wouldn’t have to see you.’

Clodagh thanked Felicity and ended the call. She sat on the bed, a feeling of intense sadness washing through her, as she stared at the empty space in the wardrobe where Adam’s suitcase should have been.
