‘Well, spending the weekend with Adam Murray was always going to be awkward for Bella. When Nick first invited us, I said no. I thought there was no way she’d be up for something like that. But when I mentioned it to her, she said we should go.’
‘She didn’t want to be with Adam because of the lack of support she’s got from the foundation?’ Rachel guessed.
‘Exactly.’ Then, after a brief pause, Simon asked suddenly, ‘Have you spoken with Clodagh yet?’ Simon asked suddenly.
‘Why do you ask?’ Rachel said.
‘There’s something I keep thinking about. It might not mean anything. I spoke to Bella about it and she said it wasn’t important.’ He smiled. ‘She’s usually right about stuff, see. I’m the one who gets things wrong all the time.’
‘Why don’t you let us decide what’s important?’ Rachel said.
‘I probably wouldn’t ever have thought about it,’ Simon said, ‘if it wasn’t for the text message. You know he sent her a text on Saturday night, right?’ Then, when Rachel nodded, ‘Well she’s telling everyone she doesn’t know what Nick wanted to speak to her about. But I think she’s lying. Because she knew him, you see. Her and Nick knew each other before the crash.’
‘Knew each other how?’ Ade asked.
‘She used to go to his restaurant a lot,’ Simon said. ‘Her and her sister. It was where they always went whenever Vivienne visited Clodagh in London. And I know you’re probably thinking so what? But isn’t it a bit of a coincidence that all three of them ended up staying in the same resort in Crete as well as being on the same flight back home?’
Rachel glanced at Ade, saw her frown and knew Ade was thinking the same thing she was. Simon was right. It was indeed ‘a bit of a coincidence’. Rachel had called Adam and Clodagh’s house earlier and arranged times to question both of them over the coming days. Top of her list of questions for Clodagh would be asking her about the exact nature of her relationship with Nick Gilbert.

Day Three
‘Are you sure you don’t want a hot drink as well?’ Rachel asked, putting a plastic cup of water on the table in front of Clodagh.
‘This is fine,’ Clodagh said, ‘thank you.’
When she lifted the cup, Rachel noted the tremor in her hand. The only sign so far that Clodagh wasn’t entirely comfortable being interviewed.
