‘No.’ Clodagh shook her head. She could feel the anxiety creeping up the longer she was in here. The effort it took to monitor everything she said, make sure she didn’t tell them everything, was exhausting. She knew if she had to stay in here much longer it would only be a matter of time before she let something slip.

Five years had passed without anyone finding out. It was unbearable to think that now, after all this time, it wouldn’t be a secret any longer. She thought of the friendships she’d made during this time and the people she’d grown close to. This little group of people whose lives had been devastated by the plane crash, they were her community now. Her friends and her support network. If they knew the truth, if they knew the sort of person she really was, then all of that would be lost to her. Because not one of them would want anything to do with her ever again.

Rachel stood at the front of the Major Incident Room, looking at the timeline on the interactive whiteboard.

‘Penny for them,’ Ade said, walking over and joining her.

‘He was killed some time between ten forty-five and midnight,’ Rachel said. ‘Most of the other guests were still up at that time. Although Clodagh and Tara both claim they’d gone to bed by then. Ivan Babić remembers saying good night to Clodagh, but she could easily have slipped outside to the beach when she left him instead of going to her room.’

‘So any one of them could have killed Nick,’ Ade said. ‘We already know that, Rach. What’s your point?’

‘We’re missing something. The problem is, I can’t see it. Those people,’ Rachel pointed at the names of the five survivors who’d been staying at the villa, ‘they all went through something extraordinary together. That must have created a special bond between them, no matter how different they are from each other.’

‘And?’

‘I keep thinking, if you experienced something like that, would it be possible for you to then kill one of the few people in the world who understood what that was like? Clodagh spoke about survivors’ guilt. She said they all had it. They must have been a great support to each other, don’t you think?’

‘You’re saying that whoever killed Nick, it wasn’t one of the survivors,’ Ade said. ‘Which leaves Bella, Simon, Adam and Jake.’

‘And Jake’s girlfriend.’

‘Felicity Sparks? Nah. She hasn’t got the brains to pull off something like that and get away with it. Anyway, Rach, I thought you’d like to know we’ve finished going through Nick’s bank records.’

‘Oh yeah?’ Rachel turned away from the timeline. She could tell from Ade’s voice they’d found something interesting.
