‘You’re back.’ Adam stood up and walked across to kiss Clodagh’s cheek. ‘How was your walk?’

‘Fine.’

She didn’t look fine, Rachel thought. She looked done in. Dark rings under her eyes, skin so white it was almost translucent.

‘What were you saying about Tara?’ Clodagh asked, looking from Rachel to Adam.

‘Adam was telling me about Tara’s phone call to him on Wednesday,’ Rachel said.

Clodagh frowned.

‘What phone call?’

Clearly, Adam hadn’t bothered telling his girlfriend about the phone call. Which made Rachel very keen to find out why he’d kept that information to himself.

Twenty-eight

Clodagh saw the flare of anger on Adam’s face when she asked him about Tara. Right now, she didn’t care. She thought back to Wednesday night, turning up at his hotel. The opened bottle of wine, the weird way he’d been acting. She felt scared, suddenly, as she tried to understand why he hadn’t told her.

‘You didn’t say anything about a phone call.’

She could feel the two detectives watching her and knew she needed to be careful about what she said. But she was angry with Adam for not telling her everything. And, just like her sister, Clodagh was reckless when she was angry.

Adam held his hands up defensively.

‘You were upset. The only thing I was thinking about was making sure you were okay. Besides, the phone call wasn’t important. I didn’t even speak to her. She left me a message asking if I knew how the police investigation was going. That’s all.’

‘She called you too, didn’t she?’ Ade said, looking at Clodagh. ‘I know you’ve already spoken to the police in London about that. But the investigation has been officially passed over to us now. So maybe you could tell us about that phone call?’

Clodagh felt like crying. The last thing in the world she wanted was to go through all that again. But Ade Benjamin was smiling expectantly at her and she knew she didn’t have a choice.

‘I didn’t speak to her,’ she said, pulling out a chair and sitting down.

‘Here.’ Adam poured some coffee into a mug and passed it to her.

She lifted the mug to her mouth, savouring the rich smell of the freshly ground beans, before remembering she shouldn’t drink it. Putting the cup down, she noticed Rachel Lewis watching her closely but, thankfully, Rachel didn’t say anything.

‘She left me a message,’ Clodagh said. ‘Said she needed to speak to me. I tried calling her back but kept getting her voicemail.’

‘So you went all the way to London to find out why she wanted to speak to you?’ Rachel said. ‘Why would you do that?’

‘I was worried.’

Rachel stared, waiting for Clodagh to say something else.
