‘You can stay at the house,’ Adam said, as they sat at one of the outside tables with their food and drinks. ‘I’ll give you as much space as you need.’

‘Thanks, but I don’t think it’s a good idea.’

He would be in her space all the time, checking if she was okay and doing everything he could to get her to change her mind.

‘Well at least let me drive you back home so you can pick up some of your stuff,’ Adam said. ‘You left last night without anything.’

‘I’m not sure,’ she said. ‘Wouldn’t it be better if I come over when you’re not there?’

‘I’m meeting Jake for lunch.’ Adam looked at his watch. ‘He’s getting the train to Lewes. We’re going to make a plan for getting my career back on track. I’ve worked too hard to give up without a fight.’

He was choosing to put his efforts into saving his career, over trying to win her back. It was exactly what Clodagh needed to hear.

‘You know what, Adam? A lift back would be great. Thank you.’

They were in the car, driving back to Bramhurst, when her phone rang.

‘I see you’ve finally remembered to charge it up,’ Adam said. ‘Miracles really do happen.’

‘Smart arse.’

She took the phone out of her bag and saw Bella’s name on the screen.

‘I’ve managed to get into the files on the memory stick,’ Bella said, when Clodagh answered. ‘You need to see them right away.’

‘It’s not a good time right now,’ Clodagh said, glancing at Adam.

He was looking straight in front of him, at the road ahead, but she couldn’t be sure he wasn’t listening to the conversation.

‘When is a good time then?’

‘I’m not sure,’ Clodagh said. ‘I’ll call you in a bit, okay?’

Bella started to say something else, but Clodagh cut her off.

‘Everything okay?’ Adam asked as Clodagh switched her phone off and put it back in her bag.

‘It’s just Bella. She’s having a hard time with Simon at the moment.’

‘You sure that’s all it was?’

‘What else would it be?’ Clodagh said.

‘I don’t know. You two seem to have grown very close these last few weeks, that’s all.’

For a moment, she wondered what he suspected she’d been doing. Before she realised it didn’t matter. They weren’t a couple now and she didn’t have to explain her actions to him if she didn’t want to.
