‘There was nothing I could do about it,’ Bella said. ‘I had to find a way to accept it, or it would have ruined my life. I wasn’t willing to let that happen.’

‘Simon told us Adam Murray also stopped you getting any support from the foundation as well,’ Rachel said.

‘Sort of,’ Bella said. ‘But the thing is, it’s not really Adam’s decision. There’s a board of trustees and all of them voted to stop me getting anything. It was frustrating at first, but I can see why Adam and the trustees made the decision they did. The foundation was set up to support the survivors and the victims’ families. That doesn’t include me because Gary and I were divorced. If they bent the rules for me, they’d have to do that for other people too. It drives Simon mad, but only because he wants what’s best for me.’

‘Would you say Simon and his brother were close?’ Rachel asked.

Bella paused, as if she was considering the question carefully.

‘Yes, I would. They hadn’t always seen eye to eye, as I’m sure Simon’s already told you. But over the last few years, they’d both made a real effort. And it paid off, I think. That’s the only reason we were there last weekend, because it was what Nick wanted.’

‘That’s not what we’ve heard,’ Rachel said.

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ Bella said.

‘We’ve been told that Nick and Simon hadn’t been getting on too well recently,’ Rachel said.

‘Who told you that?’ Bella’s face flushed. ‘Tara, I bet. She was always trying to stir up trouble between those two. She couldn’t stand Nick paying attention to anyone except her. He found her suffocating, you know. I’m sure that’s the only reason he wanted us at the villa. To avoid having to spend all his time with her.’

‘So, you’re not aware of any issues between the two brothers then?’

‘There weren’t any issues.’

‘Do you know if Nick ever lent any money to his brother?’

‘Did Tara tell you that too?’ Bella sounded properly angry now. ‘Why would she say something like that? Simon and I tell each other everything. If he’d borrowed money from Nick, I’d be the first to know about it.’

She said this with such confidence, Rachel was pretty sure she was telling the truth. But if she was, then someone else was lying. Either Simon Gilbert had hidden the loan from his wife, or Tara had deliberately lied when she’d told Rachel that there was tension between the two brothers.
