‘I don’t know.’

But it wasn’t true. Because no matter how hard she tried, Clodagh couldn’t shake off the feeling that all of it – the plane crash, the murders of Nick and Tara – was because of something she’d done. Something bad, that her damaged brain had hidden away so she wouldn’t have to ever face up to it. But she couldn’t go on hiding forever. It was time to find out what had happened that day at the airport, and who else knew about it.

Day Five

Rachel’s eyes felt dry and gritty from too much time spent staring at a screen. Her brain had stopped processing information several hours earlier, her body was sluggish and heavy. All she wanted to do was rest her head on her arms and fall asleep. It had been the early hours of Thursday morning by the time she’d got home from London. She’d managed to grab three hours’ sleep before being woken again by the alarm. So far this morning, she’d led the team briefing at eight thirty; she’d driven to Brighton to speak with Bella and Simon Gilbert; and she’d spent the last three hours at her desk working solidly.

Tara’s murder had changed everything. Until yesterday, Rachel had been working on the assumption that Nick’s murder had most likely been caused by an argument that had spiralled out of control with devastating consequences. Now, it was starting to look as if both murders might have been pre-meditated.

Adam Murray had called her first thing, asking for guarantees that the other survivors weren’t in any danger. Rachel had assured him she and her team were doing all they could, but her reassurances sounded hollow even to her own ears. The simple truth was that four days after Clodagh Kinsella had discovered Nick’s body on the beach, Rachel was no closer to working out who had killed him, or why. And with another one of the survivors killed, she had no idea which one of them might be next.

For now, the investigation into Tara’s murder was being handled by the Major Investigations Team in Charing Cross police station. As far as Rachel was concerned, this was ridiculous. In her mind, the two murders were clearly connected and Tara’s killing should be part of Rachel’s investigation. So far, however, she hadn’t been able to make that happen.

In the meantime, Rachel had started making her own notes on Tara’s murder, adding what she knew to the existing investigation’s timeline. Because no matter what the powers that be had decided, Rachel knew her best chance of tracking down Nick’s killer was by finding the connection between both murders. She picked up her phone and called Sonny McLeod, the detective heading up the London investigation.
