‘Look, I know it sounds like an overreaction, but you’ve got to understand I wasn’t thinking rationally. Nick had just been killed and when I couldn’t get through to Tara, I kept thinking what if something had happened to her as well?’
‘Turns out your instinct was right,’ Ade said.
When Clodagh didn’t reply, Rachel pushed her chair back and stood up. ‘We’d better get going and leave you to enjoy the rest of your day. Thank you both for your time. And thanks for the coffee recommendation, Adam. I may have to buy some for myself.’
At the kitchen door, Rachel turned back and looked at Clodagh.
‘I almost forgot, have you had any luck tracking down Ivan Babić?’
‘I didn’t know I was meant to be tracking him down,’ Clodagh said.
She wanted them to stop asking questions and leave.
‘I thought you and he were quite close.’
‘Ivan’s probably the person I’m closest to of all the survivors.’
‘Closer than you are to Adam?’
‘Adam wasn’t on the plane.’
God damn Rachel Lewis and her piercing eyes that seemed to look right inside your head. Well good luck looking inside my head, Clodagh thought. It’s a mess in there.
‘You met him while you were on holiday in Crete?’
‘No.’ Clodagh shook her head. ‘How could I have? Crete’s a big island. Ivan was staying somewhere in the south. I was in Analipsi in the north.’
‘Of course.’ Rachel snapped her fingers. ‘It was Robbie he met in Crete, not you.’
‘Robbie?’ Clodagh frowned. ‘I don’t think so. Ivan didn’t know any of us before the crash.’
‘He knew Robbie,’ Rachel said. ‘I’m surprised you don’t know. If you’re such good friends, why do you think he would have kept that information from you?’
Clodagh looked at Adam.
‘Did Robbie ever say anything to you about meeting Ivan in Crete?’
‘Nothing,’ Adam said. ‘As far as I know, Robbie had gone to Crete by himself. He never mentioned being there with someone else. And certainly never let on he was there with Ivan.’
Something shifted inside Clodagh. For a moment, she thought it was the baby, before she remembered she was too early in her pregnancy for that. Ivan had told her he’d been working in Crete at the time of the crash. He’d been coming to London for a sightseeing holiday.
She’d spoken with him at length about Robbie over the past few months, speculating where he’d gone and why he’d left without saying goodbye to anyone. In all those conversations, Ivan hadn’t once given Clodagh the slightest hint that he’d ever known Robbie before the crash. He’d lied to her. And now he’d disappeared so Clodagh couldn’t even ask him why.
