Rachel pretended to straighten the papers on her desk, as she thought about what to ask next.

‘Except neither of you really forgot about it,’ she said, ‘did you?’

‘I don’t understand,’ Ivan said.

‘I think you understand perfectly.’ Rachel smiled. ‘Two days ago, we managed to find Robbie. He’s been in Spain all this time, living with his mother. But you don’t need me to tell you this, because you already know.’

Ivan opened his mouth to speak, but she held her hand up.

‘Before you say anything, let me finish. The Spanish police spoke to Robbie on Saturday. I think he called you after that to tell you we’d found him. You can deny it if you want to, but we can always check your phone records. It would be better if you simply told us the truth.’

‘You’re right,’ Ivan said, after a moment. ‘I’ve known all along that Robbie was in Spain.’

‘Why didn’t you tell anyone? Adam and the others have been worried about him.’

Ivan looked at his solicitor.

‘Do I have to answer that?’

‘No. Detectives, unless you can prove that Robbie Fuson being in Spain has anything to do with your murder investigation, my client won’t be answering any further questions about his relationship with Mr Fuson.’

Rachel had been a detective long enough to know a dead end when she hit one. She could, if she really wanted to, continue to push Ivan about why he hadn’t told anyone that Robbie was in Spain. But the solicitor was right. For now, Rachel couldn’t see how Robbie’s disappearing act had anything to do with why Nick Gilbert and Tara Coleman had been murdered.

Thirty-three

After she left the pub, Clodagh went back to the house, grabbed some water and headed up the downs. She walked for hours, not wanting to return home until she was certain Jake and Felicity had gone. She did a circular walk, starting at the house and crossing over the downs to Rodmell, the beautiful village where Virginia and Leonard Woolf had lived. At the river Ouse, where the author had tragically taken her own life, Clodagh sat on the grass and took a moment to enjoy the simple pleasure of sitting by water on a warm summer’s day. The sky was blue and cloudless, light reflecting off the river as it made its journey south towards Newhaven where it flowed into the English Channel. Soothed by the beautiful setting, the storm of emotions raging through her gradually abated.
