‘I think it was Vivienne’s. The problem is, I have no idea what’s on it. It doesn’t work with my laptop. I called a computer repair shop but they said they couldn’t help. And then I remembered you work with computers. So I thought you might be able to help.’

‘If it belonged to Vivienne,’ Bella said, ‘there might be private stuff on there. Things she wouldn’t like to you see.’

‘I know that.’

‘So why not leave it alone?’

‘If I tell you, do you swear it won’t go any further?’

‘Cross my heart.’

‘I’ve got no proof of this,’ Clodagh said. ‘Not yet. But I’ve started to wonder if maybe Vivienne was having an affair.’

‘Wow,’ Bella said, after a moment. ‘You know what this means, don’t you? If your sister was seeing someone else, then Adam’s built his whole career on a lie.’

‘That’s why you can’t say a word,’ Clodagh said. ‘It’s too important. Besides, I might be completely wrong.’

‘And if you find something on this memory stick that proves she was having an affair,’ Bella said. ‘What then?’

‘I’m not sure. But I know something happened at the airport the day of the crash. I was angry with Vivienne, but I can’t remember why. I’m hoping whatever’s on that stick might help me remember.’

‘When I said I wanted to know why Gary was drinking that day,’ Bella said, ‘you told me to let it go. Said I could drive myself crazy trying to work it out. I’m tempted to give you similar advice.’

‘I’ve never been very good at taking my own advice,’ Clodagh said.

She thought Bella was going to say no. But after a moment, Bella reached across the table and took the memory stick.

‘I’ll take a look as soon as I can. But don’t blame me if I find something you didn’t want to see, okay?’

Clodagh nodded. She was fine with that. Whatever Bella discovered, it was better to know the truth.

Forty-two

It had stopped raining by the time Clodagh left the coffee shop. She said goodbye to Bella and walked up Queen’s Road to the train station. The journey back home seemed to take forever. By the time she’d got off the train at Bramhurst, she was ready to collapse onto the sofa and watch crap TV for the rest of the day. Adam was in London today; she wasn’t expecting him home until later this evening. But when she got back home, he was already there, sitting at the kitchen table with a face like thunder.
