‘Easy for you to say.’ Bella gave a small smile. ‘Don’t worry. I’m well past the stage of not being able to be happy for my friends when it happens to them. And I’m happy for you. Truly I am. If you’re sure it’s what you want?’

‘I wasn’t sure,’ Clodagh said, ‘not at first. But I’ve come around to the idea now.’

After last night, she was also starting to wonder if she’d be bringing this baby up by herself.

‘Well, we could all do with some good news at the moment. I can’t think of anything more exciting than my friend having a baby. Congratulations, Clodagh. I really mean it.’

‘Thank you. Anyway, enough about me. How’s Simon doing?’

‘Not good, if I’m honest. He’s in a very dark place and I don’t know what I can do to help him. Nick’s death hit him really hard. He’s trying to be there for his parents, too. Which is adding to the pressure at the moment. They keep asking him to go over everything that happened on Saturday night. I swear, Clodagh, they’re acting as if they think Simon could have prevented what happened. It’s awful.’

‘They’re grieving too, remember?’ Clodagh said. ‘We both know people react differently to grief. The sooner the police find out who killed Nick, the better. Until then, it’s difficult to know who to trust, isn’t it?’

‘Not for me,’ Bella said. ‘I trust you and Simon. No one else.’

What about Adam? Clodagh wanted to ask but decided not to because she wasn’t sure she would like Bella’s answer. And right now, she wasn’t sure herself how she felt about Adam. His recent angry outbursts had left her wondering what had happened to the man she’d fallen in love with.

‘The police haven’t released his body yet,’ Bella said. ‘So we can’t even start planning his funeral. I think if we could do that, it would help his parents. Give them something to focus on.’

‘Is there anything I can do?’

‘No.’ Bella smiled. ‘But thank you for the offer. When you called earlier, you said you wanted a favour. What do you need?’

‘This.’ Clodagh opened her bag and took out the memory stick.

She’d decided to find out what was on it. If it had belonged to Vivienne, then she’d hidden it for a reason. Clodagh was hoping whatever was on the stick might help her remember why she’d rowed with Vivienne at the airport.

‘A memory stick?’ Bella frowned. ‘Don’t tell me you’re using this to back up your files. Haven’t you heard of the cloud?’
