‘So what would happen,’ Rachel said, ‘if someone discovered the marriage wasn’t as perfect as Murray claimed it was? Worse, what if they found out that Adam Murray was having an affair with his wife’s sister?’

‘Doesn’t make sense,’ Sam said. ‘I mean, the man was married to Vivienne Kinsella. You ask me, I can’t see him risking his marriage to shag the sister. Who, by the way, is pretty enough but not a superstar like Vivenne was.’

‘Well then,’ Rachel said, after a moment. ‘I’m glad no one’s asking you. I know you think it’s impossible that a man could have an affair when he’s married to a famous actress, but let’s at least explore the possibility instead of discounting it out of hand. As soon as we’re finished here, I want you to get back onto the ex-boyfriend and ask him what he thinks.’

‘I’ve started looking at the rest of the people Nick went to Crete with,’ Ade said. ‘His three friends – Gary Wakefield, Josh Ward and Owen Williams.’

‘And?’

‘Josh and Owen were both happily married, as far as I can tell. Nothing to indicate either of them might be having an affair. Gary was divorced, as we know. I spoke to a guy at Air Investigations who was involved in the crash enquiry. His story backs up what Shelly Clarkson told us. There was a ten-hour delay on the way back because of a technical problem with the plane. During that time, the original captain fell ill with food poisoning. So the airline asked Gary to step in. Somehow, he managed to get on the plane without any of the other staff realising he’d been drinking.’

‘Any hint of something going on between him and Vivienne Kinsella?’ Rachel asked.

‘Nothing.’

Rachel sighed. It felt as if they were going round in circles, instead of moving forward.

‘If Vivienne was having an affair,’ she said, ‘it would be good to get some proof. But I don’t want us focusing on that at the exclusion of other things. I also need you to speak to the guys looking through the CCTV footage near Tara’s apartment building. Ask them how much longer they’re going to take.’

Rachel spent the next twenty minutes allocating tasks and deadlines for when things needed to be done. When she was finished, she thanked everyone for their time and told them she’d see them at tomorrow morning’s briefing. After that, she connected her laptop into one of the docking stations and started going through her emails.

She’d been working for the best part of an hour when Sam came bouncing up to her, with all the enthusiasm of an over-excited Labrador.
