‘Nick and Tara were both murdered. Any of the people at the villa the night Nick was killed is a suspect for his murder. With the exception of Shelly Clarkson, who left before the murder happened. Shelly also has an iron-clad alibi for when Tara was killed. Ivan Babić and Bella Gilbert too. Ivan was in a bar in Chichester, Bella was at work.

‘A forensic analysis of hair samples left at both crime scenes hasn’t given us anything we can work on. So our focus for the moment is twofold: checking CCTV footage and ANPR records, and doing a bit more digging into the survivors’ backgrounds. We know that Nick was staying at the same resort in Crete as Clodagh and Vivienne. I don’t think that’s a coincidence, so I want to know why he was there and how well he knew the two sisters. Ade, anything on that yet?’

‘I’ve spoken to Nick’s parents,’ Ade said, ‘and some of the people he was working with back then. They’ve all said he had plenty of girlfriends, none of them serious. But one person, the restaurant manager at the time of the crash, says Nick had been seeing someone and it seemed to be the real deal. He also said Nick was very secretive about the relationship. Which was very out of character, apparently.’

‘We need to find out who she was,’ Rachel said. ‘If Nick and Vivienne were having an affair, and Adam found out about it, we’ve got a clear motive.’ She looked around the room, her eyes landing on Sam Latimer.

‘Sam, anything new on Clodagh?’

‘At the time of the crash, she was working as a lawyer in the City,’ Sam said. ‘I’ve spoken to her boss from those days. Says Clodagh was hard working, good at her job, popular. She was very private about her famous sister, apparently. The boss got the impression Clodagh and Vivienne weren’t that close.’

‘What were they doing going on holiday together if they weren’t that close?’ Rachel said.

‘I asked the same question,’ Sam said. ‘Her boss didn’t know. I managed to track down an ex-boyfriend as well. Shane Cross. He was going out with Clodagh until about a year before the crash. He says she left him because she’d met someone else.’

‘Who?’ Rachel asked.

‘Cross couldn’t give me a name,’ Sam said. ‘Just that she started dating some guy who he heard was already married.’

‘What if it was Adam Murray?’ Rachel said, testing the theory to see what the other people in the room thought about it.

‘I don’t think so,’ Sam said.

‘Why not?’ Rachel asked.

‘Because he never stops going on about how perfect his marriage was,’ Sam said. ‘He’s built his entire career on it.’
