‘Sorry.’ Rachel smiled. ‘The first chapter of Adam’s book is all about how perfect his marriage was. It’s nauseating. And it’s a lie. I love my wife. I think she’s the most remarkable, beautiful woman I’ve ever met. I know, deep inside me, that if I wasn’t with Grace I wouldn’t be with anyone else. Before I met her, I never believed in the idea of having a soulmate. But that’s exactly what she is. My soulmate. I love her, and I will never stop loving her. Even if I went home tonight and she said she wanted a divorce, I would continue to love her for the rest of my life. I know how pathetically romantic that sounds, but it’s true.’
‘So you’re saying… What?’ Ade frowned. ‘That it’s okay for you to have a soulmate, but not Adam Murray?’
‘No.’ Rachel shook her head. ‘I’m saying that even when someone is your soulmate, marriage is still hard work. I’m sure it helped that Vivienne and Adam had money. She was loaded, right? But even with lots of money, all relationships have their ups and downs. It’s no secret that Vivienne Kinsella was quite a tricky personality. They must have had rows and arguments and times when they wanted to throttle each other. Just like every other couple in the world. Yet none of that is ever mentioned. His so-called memoir is nothing of the sort. It’s a work of fiction.’
‘Let me think this one through,’ Ade said. ‘You’re saying Vivienne Kinsella was having an affair, and her husband knew about it but after she died he lied about the state of their marriage. Why would he do that?’
‘Look at how successful he’s been,’ Rachel said. ‘Before his wife died, he was a struggling writer. These days he’s a celebrity about to launch his own TV show. There are a lot of people who’d think that’s worth lying about.’
‘Even if what you’re saying is true,’ Ade said. ‘How is it relevant to this investigation?’
‘Let’s assume for a second that Adam lied,’ Rachel said. ‘And let’s also assume that Vivienne and Nick were having an affair. We know Nick was drunk and obnoxious the night he was killed. What if he decided to tell Adam about the affair?’
‘And Adam flipped and killed him.’ Ade nodded. ‘It’s possible. Although it doesn’t explain why Nick kept quiet about the affair for so long. I mean, if he didn’t say anything for five years why say something now?’
‘He was having money problems,’ Rachel said. ‘Maybe he threatened to blackmail Adam, expose his marriage as a sham unless Adam gave him some money.’
Ade drained her glass of wine and stood up.
