After coming back from London, Rachel and Ade had spent the afternoon going back over all the evidence they’d gathered on both murders, looking for something that would push the investigation forward. The hair samples from Tara’s dress they’d sent off for analysis had come back. They weren’t a match for any of the people who’d been at the villa. Which either meant the killer was not part of the group at the villa or, the hair sample was unconnected with Tara’s murder. Rachel still had a pair of officers trawling through the CCTV footage in the area around Tara’s apartment building. So far, they hadn’t found anything that helped identify Tara’s killer.

‘I’ve been thinking,’ Ade said.

‘Uh-oh.’

‘Ha, very funny. Hear me out first before you mock, Rach. I’d like to go back and look at what each of the survivors was doing in the lead-up to the crash. It’s like – how can I explain it? – like there’s a piece missing, you know? Robbie and Ivan met on holiday, yet for some reason they kept this secret from the others. Then there’s Clodagh and Nick. There’s something she’s not telling us about that holiday. I don’t care what she says, I don’t believe it’s a coincidence she ended up staying at the same resort as Nick.’

‘We’ve already been over this,’ Rachel said. ‘If they were seeing each other, why would they keep it a secret? They were both single back then. They would have had no reason to hide their relationship.’

‘What if it was Vivienne?’ Ade said. ‘She would have known Nick too. Her and Clodagh used to eat at his restaurant together. If she was having an affair, she’d have wanted that kept quiet, right?’

Rachel took another sip of her drink as she considered this.

‘That would mean her marriage to Adam wasn’t the perfect union he’s always claimed it was.’

‘You think he made it up?’ Ade said.

‘I’m not sure. I bought his book when it first came out. Dreadful rubbish. Couldn’t get past the first few chapters. Now I know why. Because he was describing a fairy tale, wasn’t he?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘It’s so obvious,’ Rachel said, ‘I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to work it out. Adam and Vivienne. It’s probably not relevant to the investigation. Except it shows Adam Murray up as a liar. But people tell lies all the time. It doesn’t make them murderers.’

‘You do know I’ve no idea what you’re on about?’
