- About the Author
- Also by Sheila Bugler
‘First we have Nick Gilbert,’ Sharon said. ‘Murdered on the private beach of the Blue Dolphin, a fancy seafront villa in Seaford. Which in itself is a bit of a PR disaster for our local tourism industry, but we’ll park that particular piece of shit for now. A few days later, the woman Gilbert was dating is also killed. Her body discovered by the same person who discovered her boyfriend’s body.
‘Meanwhile, this whole story has the tabloid editors rubbing their hands in glee. Because not only was Nick Gilbert a celebrity chef who had achieved quite an impressive level of fame, considering the fact he was remarkably talentless and without charm, he also happened to be one of only eight people to survive a plane crash at Gatwick airport five years earlier. Add to this, one of our suspects is Adam Murray, also in the public eye because of some maudlin memoir he’s written about his wife, a famous actress who died in the crash.’
‘And the work he’s done for the Vivienne Kinsella Foundation,’ Ade said.
‘Indeed.’ Sharon rewarded the interruption with a smile in Ade’s direction. Even though Rachel was pretty sure that’s not the reaction she would have got if she’d dared speak up when Sharon was in full flow.
‘It’s good news we’ve managed to track down Robbie Fuson,’ Sharon continued. ‘Although I can tell you both now, I’m not buying his story about buggering off to Spain for no reason except he wanted a break.’
Sharon glowered at her two subordinates, sitting on the opposite side of the table.
‘I invited you in this evening to get an update on your investigation and hear your thoughts on how close we are to a conviction. Believe me, there are many other ways I’d rather spend my Saturday than sitting here looking at both of you. But as you can imagine, there’s a lot of pressure from above to get this tied up as quickly as possible. I’ve promised the boss we’ll have a substantial update for her by Tuesday morning. I assume that won’t be problematic?’
How substantial was ‘substantial’, Rachel wanted to ask. Instead, she returned Sharon’s smile and said, ‘I think we can manage that.’
‘Good. In that case, perhaps you’d both like to share your thinking to date? Who are our main suspects? How close are we to getting a conviction?’
