‘Positive.’ Ade switched the engine off and looked through the window at the house. ‘You think he was jealous of his brother’s wealth?’
‘I’m hoping we’ll find out.’ Rachel opened the door and stepped out of the car. The sun had gone down, and a round white moon hung low at the end of the street. It was still warm, the air sticky with residual heat as she walked up to the house and rang the bell. A few seconds later, the door opened and Simon Gilbert peered out at her.
‘Oh, it’s you.’ He frowned. ‘Has something happened?’
‘We’ve got a few more questions if that’s okay,’ Rachel said. ‘Any chance we could come inside?’
‘You want to ask me questions at this time of night? Couldn’t you have waited until tomorrow?’
‘Not really,’ Rachel said. ‘We’re conducting a murder investigation, Mr Gilbert. Which means working non-stop to find your brother’s killer. If that’s inconvenient, then I’m afraid there’s not much I can do about that.’
‘You’re not going to find the killer by talking to me, are you?’ Simon leaned forward and Rachel caught the stink of body odour and stale booze. He was a handsome man but, right now, he was a mess. His hair was standing on end, like he hadn’t brushed or washed it and there were several stains on his too-tight T-shirt that strained across his toned six-pack.
‘You’d be surprised what information people know that can help us solve a case,’ she said. ‘Our best chance of finding out who killed your brother is to keep asking questions. We’re speaking to everyone who was at the villa on Saturday night, not just you. The more questions we ask, the better chance we’ve got of finding the answers we need.’
She waited for him to argue back at her. But after a moment, he shrugged and stepped back into the house.
‘You’d best come in, then.’
They followed him along a narrow hallway to the kitchen at the back of the house.
‘Is Bella here?’ Ade asked, as the three of them sat around the kitchen table.
‘She’s at work,’ Simon said. ‘It’s a busy week for her. I’ve hardly seen her.’
‘I thought she worked as a computer technician,’ Ade said. ‘Do they work nights?’
‘Sometimes,’ Simon said. ‘Depends what they’re working on. They’re rolling out a new IT system and they can only do that at nights when the staff aren’t working.’
‘We didn’t realise when we spoke to you both yesterday that Bella used to be married to Gary Wakefield,’ Rachel said.
