‘Nothing of note on the area around his body. Some strands of hair found on his jacket, which we’ve sent off for testing. We’ve taken DNA samples from everyone who was at the villa, so we may get a match. For now, everyone who was at the villa on Saturday night is a suspect. The villa had CCTV. One camera at the front of the building, another at the back facing the garden and the beach. I’ve got two officers going through all the CCTV footage from that today.
‘Oh, and the foundation paid for everyone’s accommodation except Simon and Bella. They came as Nick’s guests. He paid for their room, the meal, everything.’
‘You think that’s relevant?’ Sharon asked.
‘At the moment,’ Rachel said, ‘everything’s relevant.’
That got a smile from her boss.
‘Quoting the great Ed Mitchell. Well, you could do a lot worse.’
Ed Mitchell had been Rachel’s partner for most of her career as a detective. Until he’d taken a sabbatical while he tried to work out whether he wanted to take early retirement like so many other detectives had done.
‘We’ll be speaking to Simon Gilbert later today,’ Rachel said. ‘I want to get a better idea of his relationship with his brother. And I’d like to know why neither he nor his wife thought to tell us that she used to be married to Gary Wakefield.’
Rachel stopped speaking. She hadn’t referred to her notes once and sincerely hoped Sharon had noticed and might even be impressed.
‘What about the one who’s missing?’ Sharon said. ‘Robbie Fuson. Tell me a bit more about him.’
‘Until three months ago, he was a trustee for the foundation. He stepped down from that, apparently refusing to give any reason, and no one seems to have heard from him since. We’ve got an address for him in Chiswick, west London. Someone from the local force is going there this morning to see if they can track him down.’
‘Let’s hope they manage to find him before the press do,’ Sharon said. ‘Speaking of which, I hope we won’t see any further debacles like this morning?’
‘Definitely not.’ Rachel knew Sharon was referring to Adam Murray’s appearance on Good Morning Britain. A badly timed interview that did nothing to help the investigation, and everything to bring more unwanted press attention on Rachel and her team.
‘I spoke to his agent this afternoon and made it clear there were to be no more interactions with the press unless we specifically approved them. He didn’t like it, but I think he got the message.’
