‘You’ve come at the wrong time’ he said. ‘Nobody here in this big old building except me and the two guard dogs, Arthur and Martha. If you want to speak to any of the staff, you need to come back during the day.’

‘How do I know you’re telling the truth?’

‘Hell. How do I know you’re the police? You could be anyone, for all I know.’

‘I’ve got ID. Look. This proves I am who I say I am.’

Rachel held her warrant card up to the camera and waited.

‘Detective Inspector Lewis,’ the man said. ‘All right. Sorry about that. We get all sorts of crazies coming here stirring up trouble. My job is to make sure no one gets into this building unless we know they’re not going to cause us any problems. You’re welcome to come in and look for yourself, but I’m not lying to you when I tell you there’s no one here.’

‘We probably should come in and take a quick look, anyway,’ Rachel said.

She got back in the car and waited for the gates to open. As Ade drove up towards the building, it was obvious that the security guard had been telling the truth. Apart from one light in the entrance lobby, the entire building was in darkness.

‘No cars in the driveway,’ Ade said. ‘Which means if she’s here, she didn’t drive. You going to tell me what we’re doing here, Rach? Because the way I see it, our two key suspects are Adam Murray and Simon Gilbert. And both of them are currently in police custody.’

Rachel didn’t answer. She was remembering the first time they’d been here. Sitting outside in the warm sunshine with Bella Gilbert.

‘She told us she has her lunch outside,’ she said.

‘Who told us that?’

‘Bella,’ Rachel said. ‘The first time we were here. She said she eats her lunch outside. Every day, unless it’s raining.’

‘So?’

Up ahead, a broad, tall man came out of the building and started walking towards them. He raised his hand in greeting. Rachel was about to wave back, when her phone started ringing.

‘Sam,’ she said, putting the phone to her ear. ‘Everything okay?’

‘I found something,’ Sam said. ‘It may not be important, but I thought you should know.’

‘Go on.’

‘Do you remember Clodagh’s ex-boyfriend said she left him for a married man? You thought it might have been Adam. I decided to do a bit more digging. Spoke to a few people she used to work with. They all swore blind the man she was seeing couldn’t have been Adam.’

‘And that’s it?’ Rachel said. ‘That’s what you called to tell me?’
