‘You assaulted her and locked her in a room,’ Ade said.

‘I shouldn’t have done that. I was panicking. I didn’t know what I was doing.’

‘What about the documents Clodagh found, alleging you assaulted her sister?’ Rachel asked.

Adam put his head in his hands.

‘I didn’t do those things to Vivienne. She made it up because she wanted a divorce.’

‘Bullshit.’ Rachel slammed her hand on the table, making Adam and his brief jump. ‘You cannot sit here and tell us all this crap and expect us to believe it. No matter what way you look at things, you have lied repeatedly. Which means you’re now in a situation where no one’s going to believe a word you say. You’ve told me how important your reputation is to you. Well, I’m afraid to tell you that reputation is ruined. And the only person to blame for that is you. Your lies have caught up with you, and now you’re going to have to deal with the consequences of everything you’ve done.’

She stood up.

‘Interview terminated at,’ she glanced at the clock on the wall, ‘5:45 p.m.’

Outside the interview room, she leaned against the wall taking some deep breaths, waiting for the rush of anger to pass.

‘You okay, Rach?’ Ade asked.

‘I’m angry he didn’t tell us the truth earlier,’ Rachel said. ‘All that time we wasted and the killer was there in front of us. How could I have missed it?’

‘We still don’t know for sure he’s the killer.’

‘You think we’ve called this wrong?’

‘I guess not.’ Ade sighed. ‘He’s got a motive for killing Nick. Tara too, if she knew about Vivienne and Nick. He’s got no alibi for either of the murders.’

‘Okay.’ Rachel nodded, her mind made up. Sod that voice inside her head. Her first case as SIO and she was almost ready to nail someone for the two murders. This was what she’d worked so hard for these last few weeks, sacrificing time with Grace and any prospect of a social life to get to this moment. She wasn’t going to let her own self-doubts get in the way. She’d come too far for that.

‘Let’s call everyone together, go back over every single piece of evidence against Adam Murray until we’ve found a way to make it stack up. I’m not going back into that interview room until I’m ready to charge him.’
