But she already knew. Nick and Vivienne. It had always been there, hiding in the corners of her mind, waiting for the right moment.
‘I thought you must have been in on it,’ Adam said. ‘It’s been haunting me, ever since I found out, wondering how much you knew and why you’d never told me. When she went to Crete with you, I really believed it was so you both could spend time together. But when Nick told me that she’d gone there to be with him, I assumed you must have known all along and decided not to say anything. I thought you’d been trying to protect me.’
It all made sense now. Those times in Crete, when Vivienne was nowhere to be found; coming back hours later with all sorts of pathetic excuses; choosing to eat in the hotel every evening instead of wanting to explore some of the local restaurants.
‘I never knew who it was,’ Adam said. ‘Five years, Nick kept it a secret. Until that night at the hotel. He was trying to persuade me to invest in his latest venture, a chain of upmarket fast food restaurants. I told him I wasn’t interested, and he turned nasty. Threatened to tell everyone the sort of man I really was. When I asked him what he was talking about, he told me he’d seen the photo. I knew there was only one reason that was possible. He was the person Vivienne had been seeing behind my back.’
‘You told me the row was about me,’ Clodagh said. ‘You deliberately chose a lie that would humiliate me and make me feel inferior.’
She needed to get out of here, into the clear air where she could breathe and think clearly. But when she tried to get past Adam, he grabbed her, holding tight so she couldn’t move.
‘Where are you going?’
‘Anywhere that’s far away from you.’
Her phone was on the table by the laptop. She tried to reach past him to pick it up, but he got there first, sweeping the phone onto the floor. Out of reach.
‘You can’t tell anyone about this, Clodagh. If it gets out, it will ruin me.’
‘Is that why you killed Nick? Because of the risk to your precious career? Well you know what? Your whole career is fake. Everything about you is a lie.’
‘I didn’t kill him. But I was glad when I heard he was dead. He was a bastard. You should have seen him when he told me. He loved every second of it.’
Clodagh tried to pull free, but his grip was too tight.
‘Let me go, Adam. I’m warning you.’
