‘Is that why you disappeared last week?’ Clodagh said. ‘Because you knew the police would ask questions about where he was and you didn’t want to tell them?’
Ivan broke off another chunk of Toblerone and put it in his mouth.
‘Maybe,’ he said eventually.
‘Maybe nothing. Ivan, I’m getting sick of people bullshitting me. What else are you not telling me?’
‘I knew he was running away from something,’ Ivan said. ‘I didn’t buy his bullshit about being sick of life in England. But when I pushed him to tell me the truth, he shut down. After Nicky died, I called Robbie to tell him what had happened. I didn’t want him to hear about it from anyone else. And he begged me not to tell the police where he was. I didn’t want to lie so I thought it would be easier if I hid for a little while. I have a friend who runs a bar in Chichester, so I went to stay with him for a few days until things calmed down.’
‘Except they didn’t calm down,’ Clodagh said.
‘Robbie called me on Sunday morning,’ Ivan said. ‘He was upset because the police had tracked him down. He thought I’d told them where he was. It wasn’t me, but that didn’t stop him shouting at me as if I had betrayed him. The phone call made me angry so I decided to come back and tell the police everything I knew.’
‘I wish you’d told me,’ Clodagh said.
‘Yes.’ Ivan smiled. ‘Me too, lady.’
‘You think I should tell the police?’ she asked.
‘Of course,’ Ivan said. ‘What Robbie did is terrible. But before you do that, you need to ask yourself a question. Are you using this as an excuse to have an argument with Adam so you can break up with him? Or are you doing it because you really think it’s the right thing to do?’
‘Because it’s the right thing to do,’ Clodagh said. ‘How can you even ask that question?’
‘You’ve told him about the baby?’
‘Not yet. I haven’t had a chance.’
‘I think that is probably nonsense,’ Ivan said.
‘And I think you should stop sticking your nose into my business.’
‘If you don’t want my nose in your business, why did you come here today?’
Good point. Clodagh broke off some more Toblerone and chewed it angrily.
‘Lady, listen to me. That baby in your tummy isn’t going to go away. You are very soon going to have to make some important decisions. You can’t make those decisions without speaking to Adam. Tell me I’m wrong and I will close my mouth and not say another word to you about your business.’
‘You’re not wrong,’ Clodagh said. ‘Unfortunately.’
‘So, what are you going to do?’
