Rachel didn’t bother explaining that there was no such thing as a day off during a murder investigation. She was officially not working today, but she had told Ade to call her immediately if any new information came in.

‘Ivan Babić called the station this morning asking to speak to you,’ Ade said. ‘I’ve told him it will have to be an under caution interview. He’s agreed to that.’

‘Any idea where he’s been for the last week?’

‘Staying with friends in Chichester, apparently. I’ve arranged to meet him at the Custody Suite at Brighton an hour from now. Duty solicitor’s on his way over and I’m about to head across. I can get Sam to do it with me if you can’t come in.’

‘No, it’s fine.’ Rachel kept her eyes averted from Grace, not wanting to see the expression on her face as she told Ade she’d be into work within an hour. ‘The sooner we get this over and done with the better.’

‘Don’t tell me,’ Grace said, as Rachel hung up. ‘You’ve got to go into work.’

‘I’m sorry,’ Rachel said, although her apology did nothing to shift the look of irritation on Grace’s face. A look, Rachel realised, she was seeing more and more these days. ‘You know how much I’d been looking forward to spending some time together.’

‘I don’t know that, actually.’

‘What do you mean? Grace, I love you. Obviously I’d rather be with you instead of going into work. But something’s come up and I don’t have a choice.’

Grace sighed.

‘I understand that, Rachel. But it’s not easy always taking second place to your job. How would you feel if I kept cancelling our plans at the last moment because of work commitments?’

Rachel didn’t point out that their jobs were so different that was unlikely to happen. Grace designed her own clothes and sold them from her shop in Lewes, which focused exclusively on clothes made by local fashion designers.

‘I’d probably feel the same way,’ Rachel said, choosing a more diplomatic response. ‘And if I could get out of this, I would.’

‘What’s happened?’

‘One of our key suspects has been missing all week. He’s turned up at the station this morning, saying he wants to talk to me.’

Grace’s expression softened.
