‘To you.’ Jake tilted his glass in Adam’s direction, before taking a drink. ‘And your career in TV.’ He winked at Clodagh. ‘This new show is going to be huge. I hope you’re ready for it.’

‘It’s not going to affect me very much,’ Clodagh said.

‘That’s where you’re wrong.’ Jake wagged his finger at her, in that patronising way of his. ‘The press are going to be almost as interested in you as Adam. Sister of the famous Vivienne Kinsella, now living with her husband. It’s a tabloid editor’s wet dream.’

‘Jesus, Jake.’ Adam shook his head. ‘Do you always have to be so crude?’

‘She ought to know what to expect,’ Jake said. ‘It’ll be worse if they find out it was Clodagh who discovered the two bodies. You think the cops will manage to keep that information from them?’

‘The cops?’ Clodagh said.

‘Pigs, fuzz, whatever you want to call them.’ Jake waved his hand in the air, dismissively. ‘You reckon that chubby detective is up to leading a case like this? I tried to have a chat with her the other day, I wanted her to do something about all the press intrusion. Stupid bint made it clear she wasn’t going to help. She needs to pull her finger out and get this mess sorted out ASAP. Because the longer this business drags on, the more problematic it’ll be for us.’

‘Problematic how?’ Clodagh had curled her hands into fists, digging her fingernails into her palms to stop herself shouting at him to get the fuck out of her life forever.

‘You serious?’ Jake scowled at her. ‘This whole mess is bad for us, Clodagh. Adam here is on the brink of the biggest moment in his career. If that woman can’t clear this up quickly, there’s a real risk Trident will pull out of the deal. If that happens, we are royally stuffed, my dear.’

‘No you’re not,’ Clodagh said. ‘Even if the TV show doesn’t happen, Adam has already made more money than most people could ever dream of. He’ll carry on writing his books and doing his talks. Life will go on for us. Unlike Nick and Tara. Whether you like it or not, what happened to them isn’t just some little problem for you or Adam. Someone killed them. Probably someone we know. And finding out who did that, and why they did it, might take time but so what? Isn’t it more important that the police find the killer than what this might mean for some stupid TV show?’

‘You think it’s stupid?’ Jake laughed, a low, nasty sound. ‘Well isn’t that something? Your boyfriend’s career’s just a joke to you now, is that it?’
