Adam frowned. ‘What are you talking about? How is any of this my fault?’
‘I saw you.’ Tara prodded Adam’s chest with her finger. ‘You and Nick had one hell of an argument last night. You didn’t think anyone saw you, but I did. And I heard you threatening him. I’ve been sitting here all morning, trying to keep quiet, waiting until I could tell the police what I saw. But I can’t keep it in. I need to know, Adam. What happened in the smoking area last night?’
‘Oh that.’ Adam’s face cleared, causing some of the tension to leave Clodagh’s body. The relief was short-lived, rapidly replaced by guilt at allowing herself to think, even for a second, that Adam might have had something to do with Nick’s death. The very idea was ludicrous.
‘It wasn’t anything important,’ Adam said. ‘Nick was drunk and trying to stir up trouble. You know the mood he was in yesterday. He was having a go at me about Bella.’
‘Bella?’ The confusion on Tara’s face mirrored how Clodagh felt. ‘Why was Nick talking to you about Bella?’
‘He thought the foundation should have done more to help her.’
‘Bullshit.’ Tara pushed her face close to Adam’s. ‘We both know Nick has never cared about any of that. You can lie to me all you like, Adam Murray. But I’m going to make sure the police know what happened.’ Tears started rolling down Tara’s face, but she didn’t seem to notice. ‘I keep waiting for him to walk in and ask me what all the fuss is about. But that’s never going to happen, is it?’
She looked at Clodagh.
‘Is that why you went out there this morning? Did Adam send you out to check on the body and make sure Nick was really dead?’
‘Of course not.’
Clodagh’s mind raced as she tried to work out what Adam was playing at. He hadn’t mentioned anything about an argument with Nick. Not even when she’d run back into the room this morning and woken him up to tell him Nick was dead. Something cold lodged itself in the pit of her stomach, refusing to shift.
‘You need to calm down, Tara,’ Adam said.
There was a hard edge to his voice that Clodagh recognised. He spoke like that when he was struggling to keep his temper under control.
‘Don’t you dare tell me what to do,’ Tara said. ‘Nick’s lying out there on that beach. Dead. And you know what I’ve worked out? All those people are out there because they’re searching for clues. They think Nick was killed. And if you’ve got anything to do with what happened to him, I’m going to make sure you pay.’
