Swearing under her breath, Clodagh sat back, trying to work out what to do. There had to be a way to fix it. She went onto the internet, looking for a solution, but there were too many options and her brain couldn’t cope with the amount of information. There were plenty of laptop repair shops in Brighton. The next time she went there, she’d take the memory stick with her and see if the people in the shop could help. Until then, there was nothing else she could do. She removed the memory stick and put it in the drawer by her bed before going back downstairs.
In the kitchen, she got a glass of water and was about to go outside when she heard Jake’s voice and froze.
‘I remember having a conversation with Shelly about it,’ he was saying. ‘She said Gary was this big, fun-loving personality but the day of the crash he was acting really weirdly. She said he was upset, like he’d just had some really bad news.’
‘Stop it!’
Three faces turned to look at her.
‘What’s the matter?’ Jake said. ‘It’s not a secret that something was off that day. Why else would he get pissed before he flew that plane? See, what I’m wondering is this. What if it’s connected?’
Clodagh looked at Adam and saw he was uncomfortable with the way the conversation was going. She waited for him to tell Jake how insensitive he was being but, true to form, Adam let Jake carry on talking.
‘Ooh,’ Felicity said, joining in, ‘maybe someone spiked his drink and Nick was killed because he worked out who it was? They were friends, right? So maybe Nick knew what had happened but he never told anyone.’
Clodagh felt nauseous and dizzy. Scared she was going to throw up or faint, she pulled out a chair and sat down. Even though the last thing she wanted to do was sit out here with the rest of them.
‘Are you okay?’ Adam asked. ‘You look really pale.’
Clodagh took a sip of water before slamming the glass down on the table. ‘Hardly a surprise. Can you imagine what it’s like, listening to all of you talking about the crash as if it’s a TV drama and you’re trying to work out the plot? None of you were there that day, so none of you can understand what it was like. How fucking terrible and terrifying and utterly devastating it is to be involved in something like that.’
