“Somebody find Nathan Booker for this woman!” Shay screams loud enough for the whole club to hear her over the music, and we all laugh. As the giggles die down, Juliana and Shay share a look that catches my attention, but they don’t say anything. It’s like I just watched them communicate telepathically, but I guess it’s nothing, because neither of them says anything.
“Alright, it’s time to end all this talk about Vance,” Juliana says, just as a waitress brings us an entire tray of shots that I didn’t even notice anyone order. “Everybody grab a shot, because we owe our girl another toast for putting up with all of the vanilla. Let’s go.” Everyone grabs a glass, and even though I know this next shot is going to ruin my entire day tomorrow, I follow the crowd. “A final toast to the dearly departed, Vance Whiteman, and all of his annoying pet names for Alina. Like Sweet Pea, Pumpkin Pie, and Sugar Foot—”
“Hey, he never called me Sugar Foot! It was Sugar Plum!” I exclaim, holding back a laugh, but Juliana plows ahead.
“That definitely doesn’t help!” she announces as we all bring our glasses together. “Rest in piss, Vance. This night is for Sugar Foot and all the kinkiness in her future. To Sugar Foot!”
“To Sugar Foot!” we all scream, just before we knock back the shots, and my mouth forms a smile that will last all night—because who needs Vance when you’ve got friends like these?
Chapter Seven
Somebody please come kill me. I would literally rather be dead than living with this headache right now. Why did I have to take so many shots? What the hell was I thinking? I would choose being waterboarded over getting another whiff of alcohol.
When I open my eyes, the light from the sun slithers its way through the narrow slits in the blinds and slaps me across the face repeatedly. The blinds are closed! How is the sun still so bright? I close my eyes to try to hide from the light, but then I’m greeted with the overwhelming sensation of the entire world spinning on its axis. My body seems to float briefly before hopping on a merry-go-round and whirling in a circle that tilts back and forth as it rolls. I pop my eyes open as fast as I can, but it doesn’t stop the rushing need to vomit or the hammering headache, and I instantly realize I’m screwed. This hangover is about to make me regret celebrating the end of my relationship.
