Maybe I’m crazy, but there’s just something about the way she says it that rubs me the wrong way. It’s as if she expects this collapse, and she’s ready to catch me after I fall. Instead of feeling appreciative, I feel offended.

“Yeah … thanks,” I answer, each word sharp and cutting. “Goodnight, Juliana.”

She sighs before replying, “Goodnight, Alina.”

We hang up, and I feel the sudden sting of tears as I walk back into the Kingdom to return to bed.

Chapter Thirty-Two

“Reservation for Booker,” Nas says as we approach the hostess who’s wearing an all-black outfit, with red hair that sets her look on fire. She’s young, with blue eyes that linger on Nas a little too long, but when Nas reaches back and takes my hand in his, I know she doesn’t matter. We smile politely as the young lady grabs our menus and escorts us to a small booth in the middle of the restaurant. Another woman in a corner booth eyes Nas as we walk, but he doesn’t even notice, and I proudly grip his arm as he leads me. There will be no hiding today—no corners for us to duck into so the world doesn’t know we’re together. We’re out in the open. Loud and proud, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
