But I don’t utter a word. All I can do is watch as the two of them stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder, looking over the quiet crowd as if what we’re witnessing is totally normal. It’s like they’re used to the shock on people’s faces when he comes out, and he’s prepared for all eyes to be on him. He takes the attention and doesn’t shy away from it at all. He looks at everyone in front of them like he has come into a room containing this exact group a million times before so it’s nothing new to him. He owns the room, and I am in awe as I watch the most gorgeous man I have ever seen walk up to the table and stand behind it, smiling.
“Good afternoon, everyone,” he says in a voice made of gravel, and with the uttering of just three words, the silence is overtaken by an eruption of excited cheers.
Chapter Nine
“I’m pretty sure I could watch him forever.”
“I’m pretty sure we actually have been watching him forever. We’ve been here all day, Alina,” Shay says like she’s scolding me.
“It’s only been two hours,” I rebut. “How do you think book signings work? It was a ticketed event, which means he has to get through every person who bought a ticket.”
“I have to commend him, though,” Juliana cuts in. “He has been extremely friendly with every person who has come up to that table. He answers every question and has a genuine smile every time.”
“A genuinely gorgeous smile,” DeShaun says. “I’m with you, Alina. I’ve got nowhere to be. I can just sit here and watch this man sign books all day long. Look at those eyes, and those dimples when he smiles. Did the good lord have to make him so damn fine?”
“Who?” Shay says, frowning. “I wanna see his parents, because they’re the ones who made him. I bet they’re both gorgeous.”
“Ooh, I bet you’re right,” I reply with a smile as I continue to watch Nathan Booker sign books for fans and go out of his way to hold short conversations with each person. He doesn’t have to do that, and I’m sure he knows it’s making the entire process take longer, but he’s doing it anyway. I guess this is how he makes up for the fact that he doesn’t take pictures with his fans, which I still find very interesting.
