I lay my tipsy head back and close my eyes as a million questions float to the surface of my mind. I feel broken by the story, and I know I won’t be whole until I have answers. I need to know Nas’s response to every question I have now that I’ve read his newest book, but I’m not naïve. There’s only one way to get to the truth, and that is to confront it.
Chapter Forty-One
I don't know what I’m thinking when I pull up to his gate. I don't know what he is going to say when he sees me for the first time since he showed up at my job unannounced two and a half months ago, but after Right of the Slash, I couldn't stop myself. My brain went into autopilot and started moving my body all on its own. Nas’s book announced “The End,” and after wiping away a few tears at the sadness of the novel in my hands, I fell asleep on my couch for a few hours before waking up in a panic.
I shot upright, immediately remembering the heartache Nixon Brooks expressed as he walked out of Aria’s wedding, and before I could analyze my emotions I was already in the shower. Before I could slow myself down to think about what was happening, I was already in my car, and before I could remind myself how furious I was at Nas, I was already at his gate. It was like I fell asleep and woke up here, and now that I’m watching the gate slide open for me, I have no idea what I’m going to say once I’m inside.
I pull slowly into the driveway, but my mind is going a million miles a minute. I can barely think straight because I don’t know if this idea is good or bad. Does Nas deserve another chance because he spilled his guts in a new book? Will he even publish it, or was this all some plan to lure me back? Fuck, I shouldn’t be here. I should put the car back in gear and slam my foot on the gas, but before I can, Nas’s front door opens and I see him.
He stands in the doorway of his house wearing a plain white T-shirt that he fills out completely, making the garment look tailored to his torso. He’s wearing sweats, but even they look like a luxury brand on him, with fitted bottoms that wrap around his ankles, and a snugness in the crotch that puts his impressive package on display. Everything about him is gorgeous, yet he looks solemn. The eyes that usually pop and make me feel like I’m swimming in honey have lost all of their life. It’s Nas, but not the same Nas.
