“It’s not about that,” he says, trying to reassure me and smother my fire. “It’s about keeping people from writing about me or telling the media personal things about me. People can read what I choose to write about, but what I do in my private life is no one’s business. I’m still a person, and I should be able to date who I want without having to worry that they may try to make money from selling a story about what’s in my basement because they’re mad at me. My books are fiction, but there’s a lot of truth about me that I want to keep private.”

“Like the fact that your name isn’t Nathan,” I say matter-of-factly, and Nas flinches like I just stung him.

“Yes,” he replies after an exhale.

When he doesn't continue and I see the look on his face, I start to understand where Nas is coming from. If I’d heard about him asking women to sign NDAs before I met him, it would make complete sense to me. Of course he wants to maintain his privacy at a time when his world is probably spinning faster than he ever expected it to. He didn't know his books would blow up the way they have, and no one expects the craziness that comes with popularity and fame. He’s just trying to protect himself, and I can see that if I look at it from the outside. However, since I’m on the inside and this piece of paper is in front of me, it’s hard not to take it personally.

Nas looks at me with those beautiful eyes of his, pinning me to the chair. “I don't want this to ruin what we just had last night, because it was incredible, Alina. I mean it. You were unbelievable, and everything in me wants this to continue. I don't know where it might end up, but I know I want to find out. My life is just crazy right now, so I’m being careful. Do you understand?”

I twist my lips together as I think about it. I can tell he’s being sincere, and just like him, I want to see where this goes, too. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be dating my favorite author—a man who isn't afraid to be himself, reads tons of books, writes with the best of them, and fucks like a god on Earth. I’ll be damned if I let it go because of a piece of paper. I pick up the pen and give Nas my warmest smile.

“Yes, Sir. I understand,” I reply, just before I sign the NDA.

Chapter Twenty-Four

“Girl, you think you're slick. I saw you come in here late this morning.”
