I slide out of bed like a ninja, wiggling to the side and planting one foot on the floor to finish getting up without shaking the mattress. Nas doesn’t even flinch as I grab my clothes from their place on the spanking bench and scurry out of the room, still naked. Once I’m in the entryway, I pull the doors to the Kingdom shut to block out any sounds I might make, and put my clothes on between the bookshelves. Once I’m dressed, I tiptoe up the stairs and breathe a sigh of relief when I turn the knob to Nas’s office and find that it’s unlocked.
My heart rumbles and rattles my ribcage as I step into the dark room where Nas wrote my favorite books. I pull the door up, leaving it open just enough that I won’t have to turn the knob to get out, although I know this leaves me vulnerable to him coming in quietly. That won’t matter though, because if he catches me in here, it’ll be a serious problem regardless.
I flick on the switch, and the space lights up in front of me. The bookshelves stand tall and proud, showcasing the spines of hundreds of books on display, and I approach them with caution. This is such a sacred place for Nas, I feel like he has a bond with everything in here—like the inanimate objects will tell on me for being here without his permission, and it makes me even more nervous. At first, I scan the bookshelves as if what I’m looking for might be there. My nerves get the best of me and I spend a full sixty seconds walking around the room looking in places I know my hidden treasure—or nightmare—won’t be. The only thing on the shelves are books, just as it should be, and the memory of Heather’s words strike me in the face as if she was in the room herself.
“Just check the laptop. He leaves it in sleep mode, so you shouldn’t have to put in a password.”
I turn around and find the laptop closed on Nas’s desk, and the sight of it fills me with fear. I don’t even want to touch it, because opening it will either prove Heather wrong or right. I want her to be wrong so badly it makes me insane, but I’m terrified she will be right. As I inch my way closer, my emotions become overpowering, and tears sting my eyes. It’s like I already know this moment is about to be a back-breaker to our relationship, and that's the last thing I want in the world. But I have to know.
