‘I’ve plotted where the witnesses were, as best I can remember, given the time.’ She looked up, took a breath, and pointed to the wall at the far end to their left. ‘That’s where Alice jumped, so it will have been visible from everyone standing here’ – she extended her arms – ‘to here,’ she said, walking a little the right.

‘Where were you and Baz?’

Carla walked to a small round table, high up in the centre of the terrace. ‘Here.’ She pointed behind her, a little to the right. ‘And the group of three were just there.’

Nell walked to where Carla had pointed. ‘Here?’ she asked, stopping. Carla nodded. Nell looked to the wall where Alice had jumped. Definitely no way they could have reached her from here, and a clear view when it was empty.

‘Do any of the witness statements suggest people were standing in front of here?’ Nell gestured to the space before her.

Carla looked at her map. ‘Possibly, these and these’ – she indicated a handful of numbers on the paper – ‘but I won’t know if that’s significant until I get back and go through their corresponding statements.’

Nell could tell Carla wanted to get back to the office, her comfort zone, where she could plot out the statements on a timeline to check who agreed with whom, trying to spot the inconsistency which would lead her forward. Nell spotted a man in the far corner, clearing a table near where Alice had jumped. ‘Give me a couple of minutes and we’ll head off, OK?’ Then, without waiting for Carla’s reply, Nell went over to him, holding up her warrant card.

‘Hi, DS Jackson. Are you Adrian?’

The man looked immediately concerned, a standard response. Nell smiled in what she hoped was a reassuring way. ‘The guy downstairs said you were working last night. I wondered if you saw anything around the time a woman jumped from here?’ She indicated a little to her left. Adrian relaxed back onto the wall, obviously relieved.

‘I spoke to the woman a few minutes before she did it.’ He looked off to the left, recalling the conversation, before looking back to Nell. ‘It was pretty obvious she was homeless, but we don’t have a policy of chucking them out, not like other places. We just like to have a quiet word, we want no problems, that kind of thing.’

Nell nodded and took out her notebook. ‘And how did she seem when you spoke with her?’

Adrian frowned. ‘Confused.’

‘Confused?’

‘Yeah, like she didn’t know where she was.’

‘So on drugs then?’
