“Yeah, but it wasn’t always books. He used to write poetry and music back then. Somewhere along the line he decided to give books a try, and it was so good it got him an agent and a book deal right out of the gate. He’s always been very talented.”
“Wait, Left of the Slash was the first book he ever wrote?” I chime in now, shocked that the first book I ever read from Nathan Booker was actually the first book he ever wrote.
“It sure was,” a deep voice answers, almost scaring us before we realize the voice isn’t Keisha’s. The group turns to find Nathan Booker standing behind my couch with an adorable grin on his face.
“Oh my god,” I nearly shout when I spin around and see him. He’s so good looking it should be a crime, and now that he's this close to me, I don’t know how I’m supposed to act. My breathing becomes erratic and my body temperature skyrockets as beads of sweat form on my head.
“Hi, everybody,” Nathan says as he waves to our group, just as he did with the audience downstairs, and everyone waves and says hello in response. Giggles and blushing cheeks spread throughout the group like they're contagious.
His presence is like an alien standing amongst us. Everyone stares up at him with awe-stricken faces, and when I glance at each person in our group, they’re all mesmerized. Even Shay, who’s been happily married for six years, stares up at Nathan like he’s a demigod.
There’s something about him that can’t be pinpointed. He’s roughly six-feet tall with broad shoulders, but it’s not his size that commands attention. It’s his energy. Simply standing behind my couch, Nathan gives off something ethereal that makes you frown and tilt your head to the side, wondering what it is about him that is drawing you in. It’s like we can all tell that there’s the public version of Nathan Booker, but deep down there’s something else, and we all want to know what it is. My darkness awakens with his presence. I feel it open its eyes and blink away its sleepiness as Nathan smiles at us.
“Ladies, may I present to you, my good friend Nathan Booker,” Keisha says, presenting the author like a new car.
