The first page of the manuscript is designated for the title, while the second is the usual copyright page with all the text no one reads. The third page of the thick book stops me in my tracks. I read it once, but it doesn’t register because there’s no way it’s real. So, I read it again, holding my breath until I reach the bottom of the short page.
I didn’t write this for me. There have been too many times in my life where I only cared about myself and how I felt in the moment. I’ve been selfish. I’ve been mean-spirited. I’ve been cold-hearted. I’ve been a liar, and I’ve been a manipulator, all for the sake of “entertainment.” I was comfortable in who and what I was, despite how terrible the sum of my parts was, and I didn’t think I’d change. I never thought I had to … until I met her.
We designate the D with a capital letter as if it’s the most important, but what is the D without the “s?” This book is not about what it’s like to be the “s.” This is about what it’s like to find the “s.”
And to lose her.
My breath chokes me when I finally try to inhale, sounding more like I’m drowning than actually breathing. Is this … about me?
I flip the page with a deep, dark furrow in my brow, my heart racing as I begin chapter one.
How did I ever get to this point? My most recent book, The Client, has been so successful that I was able to lock in a signing at my hometown. I’m on cloud nine, because I never thought my life would come to this. I was just a kid who loved writing—lyrics, poems, stories, it didn’t matter to me as long as I was putting my words to paper. It was my outlet when things got too tough, and by the time I finished, I always felt better. I was able to do things with words that I wasn’t able to say in real life. Everything sounded so much better on paper, so it was like I was flipping my own reality from crap to beauty with just my fingers, but I never thought so many people would feel it so much that I’d get a book deal, let alone have a signing at a store I used to visit all the time. I used to walk by people in Barnes & Noble without anyone ever batting an eye. Now, every person in the store is here to see me, Nixon Brooks, the kid who just wanted to write his life better.
