“Shit,” she says, ducking her head low to the table as she slides out of the seat and crouches down. “Check the laptop. It’ll all be there. He can’t see me or he’ll know, and I’ll be ruined. I have to go. Just check the laptop. He leaves it in sleep mode, so you shouldn't have to put in a password.”
She starts to scurry away, literally dropping on all fours and crawling like a dog.
“What the hell?” I whisper as Nas ends his call and starts the trek back to the table. “Wait, what’s your name? Who are you?” I whisper to the woman before she turns the corner. She stops and looks over her shoulder.
“I go by Heather, but that’s my middle name. My first name is Ava.”
All of the sound and air is sucked out of the room in an instant, leaving nothing but the ringing in my ears and the thudding of my heart. Did she just fucking say her name is Ava?
“Well, that went well,” Nas says as he sits down. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Heather … Ava turn the corner and disappear. When I look at Nas, he’s beaming. “I told them all about scrapping the old story, and they were pissed, admittedly. But once I told them about the sequel to The Patient, they were all over it. They ate it up, and I’ve got the greenlight to start writing. I did it.”
Nas has happiness written all over him, and while I should feel good about seeing him be so upbeat and jovial, I’m too stunned to move or speak. I stare at him instead, my eyes scanning his face for the possibility of lies being hidden behind gorgeous skin. His face is flawless, but what lies beneath?
“You okay, Baby Girl?” Nas asks, making me have to snap out of it before I’m ready to.
“Umm … yeah. Yes … oh, yeah that’s great news,” I stammer, shaking my head to clear the static between my ears. “I’m glad they went for it. That’s great.”
“Yes, it is. I’m so fucking excited. I never thought I’d be able to write a sequel to a book like this, because I’ve just never written this way before, but I’m so hyped up to test my creativity and see what I’m really capable of. Plus, The Patient sold so well and built such a big fan base, it’s like a guaranteed success. I’m thrilled.”
