  48. About the Author

She came to a field where some soldiers were playing football with a human head. She sat on the touchline idly, watching and trying to keep up with the score.

It seemed to Kelly like her whole life were like some kind of dream.

*

One night a month (1 month) later Kelly got a call from her sister Elaine of whom she had not heard so much as a fuckin peep for several years. After terse (short) conversation they agreed to meet in town next day at the dysfunctional fountain in the old new shopping centre (the one they built before they built the other one).

The fountain, when K found it was still with some water in it and a scum of bubbles and a few coins in there too. Kelly stood for ages and waited, watching a couple of young black kids trying to fish the coins out with a bent coathanger and a dirty polythene bag for a net.

Elaine was barely recognisable when she showed up, having gained 6 or seven stone after the bust up of her marriage to a Turkish migrant worker. “I have ballooned . . .” sed Elaine, by way of dumb and unnecessary explanation.

*

At first the conversation in a nearby branch of Gin Palace was all trivia of which there is no need to report – the usual crap about tele, the weather, food, periods and the occult what women in Endland supposedly talked abt when they wer alone. But then K and E turned their thoughts to the past and begin to wonder abt their father.

Did you kill him? asked E

Yes sed K

I’m glad sed E, How come you never told us?

I never thought anyone would understand.

Maybe not. But I am glad you did it.

*

After lunch K said goodbye to E and went back to the fountain where the young black kids were still fishing in the spewy water. E stood there a while and, like the poets say ‘weighed up the weight of life’ before offering to help them, her longer reach allowing her to scoop up several coins what had previously evaded the grasp of the outcasts.

*

Two dreams.

K dreams a fish wrapped in plastic. Later the same night she dreams a horse tangled in barbed wire.

Strange to think that all animals are now extinct except man. And yet they apparently persist in Kelly’s dreams, in some tortured form at least.

*

Kelly goes to the cinema to see a film called DARK HOUSE (X).

The plot is complex, betraying more the diverse and contradictory sensibilities of its overlarge group of screenwriters than it does of the characters and their motivations, at least if you believe what Baz Norman says in his fucking write-ups.
